With so many options to consider when setting a budget for developing an e-commerce Web site, pricing can be a bit confusing.
E-commerce price list
There are two main questions I ask potential clients before estimating the cost of an eCommerce site:
1) What are your sales and traffic goals?
2) What custom features and eCommerce platform will you need for the website to meet them?
The answers vary widely depending on whether you are a start-up, a market leader, or somewhere in between. So it makes sense that eCommerce site development costs may also vary widely.
Remember: starting an eCommerce Web site is like starting a real business. It takes capital, planning, and well-thought-out marketing strategies to be successful. It is wrong to think that the eCommerce site sells by itself!
You must keep in mind that selling online with an e-commerce website is a business activity. This means that the site is only one component of a larger sales activity.
Just so you understand the concept better: selling online means.
- Having a warehouse in which to put products;
- Investing in online promotional activities to bring potential customers to your product sheets;
- Hiring consultants to support or guide you in the various aspects of e-commerce business (lawyer, accountant, store manager/e-commerce coach, search engine ranking expert, pay-per-click promotion expert, etc.);
- Spending money on shipping;
- Pay commissions on payments you receive;
- Purchasing shipping materials;
- Purchasing photographic equipment;
- More;
The main factors that determine the costs on an e-commerce price pillar:
- Website design: there is a big difference in cost for a fully customized design versus a ready-made template.
- eCommerce platform: the platform you choose (Shopify, Magento, WordPress, etc.) will greatly affect the cost of your eCommerce site.
- Features: custom eCommerce functionality needs and unique features will increase prices.
- Marketing and SEO: an integrated marketing plan will increase the cost, but may be critical for SEO and driving traffic to your site.
- Third-party integrations: running an e-commerce Web site with a third-party management or other systems will definitely affect the price.
- Shipping complexities: some e-commerce businesses have complex shipping rules that can add development time to the project.
- Uploading and creation of product sheets: if uploading all the products has to be taken care of by the person building the site, it is clear that this will impact the price.
Design: impact on e-commerce price list.
First impressions are everything, and it is important that the appearance matches your sales expectations. An amateur-looking Web site can convert visitors into customers at a much lower rate than a professional, customized e-commerce Web site. Also, consider branding; if you have a large and established brand, your website should reflect that.
Many platforms such as Shopify, Wix, Bigcommerce, etc., have design galleries, themes or templates that you can easily apply to your site. While these may not be perfect for your business or distinguish you significantly from your competitors, these templates are a quick and inexpensive option for selling online.
With such platforms, the cost of creating ecommerce is reduced but they have countless disadvantages:
- The platform is not owned by the entrepreneur, but by the company providing the platform.
- They can change the prices of the e-commerce platform without warning, and you may start paying higher fees.
- the company hosting your site can go out of business and your site could disappear at any moment.
In contrast, more configurable and customizable offerings such as Magento, WordPress or Prestashop are not designed to be set up by an entrepreneur without technical expertise. But they do have the advantage of having a proprietary e-commerce site. So you can also think of your own solution to implement your e-commerce project.
SEO and marketing
Having marketing features built into your Web site is definitely not a shortcut to the first page of Google, but it is an important step in the right direction!
