Web Design: better to go to an agency or freelancer?
So, this article starts from the fact that I have repeatedly found myself in situations where clients call me to solve some problems that were caused to them by a web agency. What do I mean?
With these lines I certainly don’t want to discredit the work of web agencies and I don’t want to lump all web agencies together, but I often and frequently notice that clients are disappointed mainly because they didn’t feel that they were taken care of in the way they expected and above all, the money spent didn’t live up to what they were promised.
What should a good web agency look like?
A self-respecting web agency should be worth as much as it weighs. If you pay thousands because they promise to follow you from the creation of your website to web marketing and social media strategies, then they should do it and well!
What happens, unfortunately, is that you often run into agencies that are composed of novice staff (because they obviously cost less) and who pass themselves off as industry gurus, with the inevitable consequence of running into real disasters!
True self-respecting agencies in my opinion are few and you can tell right away by the clients they have. If they have clients of a certain caliber, well-known brands then it is almost impossible for them to be wafflers, because big companies spend thousands and thousands a year on communication, web and marketing.
When to choose a web agency and when you should rely on a freelance web designer instead.
Let’s get straight to the point now. If yours is a company that is truly an industry leader, if you bill hundreds of thousands of euros a year then you cannot settle for a hatchback. You really need a Ferrari, so the web agency is definitely the best choice, because you will definitely need so many services that one person working alone will not be able to cover.
If yours is a small business, then you should choose a freelancer; don’t be fooled by those web agencies that promise you all-around services at unbeatable prices, because things of a certain level are paid for and a lot! Instead, try to concentrate on one or at most a few services done right!
What are the advantages of a freelancer?
- A freelancer can follow you around easily, because he doesn’t have many clients to manage and therefore can devote himself to you on the real sense of the word.
- Unless he is a waffler, he is really trained in that specific field and knows what he is doing.
- The costs are definitely lower, although it must be said that you have to be careful, because as with web agencies, a freelancer who costs too little is definitely a red flag. It’s probably the occasional greenhorn who improvises as a professional, and unless he or she has a noteworthy portfolio, you should weigh your choice carefully.
- With a freelancer you can choose to get services without contracts and fixed monthly fees. (Occasional Performance)
What are the disadvantages compared to a web agency?
Obviously this is not an article that aims only to carry water to my own mill, so I can honestly tell you what the disadvantages are or when you should choose an agency anyway.
A freelancer, as you may have already realized, cannot specialize in all fields, so it goes without saying that if one of them promises you that they can do everything well, you may start to change your ways. The world of communication and the Web is too vast a world, and it is impossible to know how to do everything!
If you need someone to follow you 360° and 100% performance in fields such as: SEO Optimization, SEM Strategies, Social Media Marketing, Video Editing, Web Design, Web Developers and Apps, then turn to a web agency. It would be really inconvenient to deal with so many professionals who do not follow a single, well-defined pattern.
There are, however, many online courses, among them I suggest Web Marketing courses, such as the one offered by Digital Coach, so that you can learn the various techniques to adopt in the digital world. In this way you could leave the technical part to your trusted Web Designer regarding the creation of the site and later, with some preparation you could start curating your own strategies.
